■ Charmed Life

Mariah Carey steels herself for the inevitable questions about her life with a laugh almost sweet enough to make us play nice. “Can’t we talk about what kind of cream I’m rubbing on my legs or something?” Though she tries to draw our attention to her body of work, who can ignore a career with such high highs (15 number one singles, best-selling female artist ever) and weird lows (her infamous TRL striptease, her struggles with exhaustion)? But Mariah has gotten up, dusted herself off, and came out singing.

First off, what question are you most sick of being asked?
Oh, my! There are a few! I don’t have one in mind, but keep going and I’ll let you know.

You’ve taken a trashing in the media these past few years. How do you keep it all in perspective?
The way I look at it is, you take the good with the bad. We’re all human, and we all go through good times and difficult times. But in the end it’s all about getting up he right way. My song “Through the Rain” (from Charmbracelet) is about going through all these things. I feel triumphant singing it.

Was there ever a particular piece of criticism that stung the most?

There were so many things. Sometimes when you’re a celebrity, people are like “Heavens to Betsy!” if you sneeze the wrong way. In reality, celebrities lead lives that don’t necessarily go in tandem with our public images. People think they know everything about you because of the way you sang “Hero.”

So are you a diva?
Everybody’s a diva these days. You can be the diva of garbage women – it doesn’t matter. It’s a little bit tired. When I was growing up, my mother was an opera singer, so I connected divas to someone who can really sing and is a bit grandiose. So I guess that would be me. There are rumors about how I walked into a hotel and insisted on completely redecorating a room before I stayed there.

So you don’t throw your weights around to get into restaurants?
No, I usually have other people take care of that for me. [laughs]

What was the most outrageous lie you head about yourself?
That I refuse to walk on grass. Even funnier is that apparently I also refuse to walk on carpeting. So I guess I hover. [laughs] How do people think I get from Point A to Point B?

But sometimes it’s another celebrity taking potshots at you. Any reason why Eminem would take a lyrical swipe at you in his song “Superman”?

Yeah, it happened. Did I have a sexual relationship with him? No, I didn’t I knew him, I hung out with him a few times, but nothing sexual occurred. I’d admit it if it did, but it didn’t. And that’s what I was so upset about the whole thing, because I was like, “Look, if I had an intimate relationship with the person, that would be one thing, but…” Maybe he thought because nothing happened he’d look bad or something.

Dare we even dig up Glitter?
C’mon, don’t do that to me!

I think we’ve found that question you hate most!
I’m bored talking about it. It was two years ago. There are so many positive things to talk about! All I can say is that I couldn’t have had the cards more stacked against me – the soundtrack came out the week of September 11th, and I had just been hospitalized for exhaustion. What could I do? Kids come up all the time and tell me they loved the movie. What are you gonna say? It’s funny!

What it tougher to take because the movie reflected your life story?
It really didn’t. The only thing was that the girl was interracial and a singer. My life story would be a hell of a lot more interesting.

Did that sour you on acting, or do you want to keep doing it?

I did a movie called Wisegirls with Mira Sorvino that was a great experience. It epitomized why I want to pursue acting. It was this little indie film, and it got some good reviews. We went to Sundance and got a standing ovation. I got to play a character that was so far from who I am. She’s a drug-dealing waitress from Staten Island who’s like [in a goombah accent] a friggin’ broad, ya know? It allowed me not to be Mariah Carey for a minute. Next I’m going this movie called Sweet Science. My character’s a boxer…a really bad one. It’s a romantic comedy.

Speaking of you and cameras, your videos do a breathtaking job of revealing you to the public.
I know I have this image that’s sexy. But I’m basically like Mary Poppins. That’s my nick-name! I’m prudish. It’s like playing dress-up. When you go through difficult stuff as a kid sometimes your childhood stays with you. I’ve hung on to that. There was a period when I was in a relationship that was confining, where I had to wear turtlenecks and long pants, and that wasn’t me. So when I broke out of that – around the time of the “Honey” video, where I jump out of the water like a secret agent – everybody was shocked. But that was the real me coming out.

Describe the lean yours for us.
Even struggling, I always felt like I was going to get past it. I remember having one pair of shoes that I had to walk to work in. I worked at a sports bar, and my job was to sit there in a tight T-shirt and sell shirts to guys. But these shoes were my mom’s and a size too small. My toes would be poking through the front, and I’d be trudging through the snow.

You were married at age 23 to Tommy Mottola, then chairman of Sony Music Entertainment. What do you learn about marriage?
To say away from it! [laughs] I would marry again if it were about having kids, but other than that I can’t see myself doing it.

And what did the experience teach you about record executives?
That they’re brutal! I would hear the way they talk about the artist’ backs because I had the unique position of being there behind closed doors. It wasn’t pretty.

Now that you’re a powerful singer, songwriter, and producers, do you have a dream collaborator?
I’ve always been a fan of Stevie Wonder, and we’ve always talked about working together. I’ve worked with so many people it’s just unbelievable – everyone from Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z to Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Pavarotti.

What’s your best ODB story?
I love him. He’s the funniest because he just doesn’t care. He’s hilarious.

Is he batshit crazy?
It depends on his mood. But he’s a really cool guy. He’s talented and…very free.

Are you keeping your eye on any up-and-coming divas?
I like Beyonce. She’s cool. I like that she writes her own songs, as opposed to people who are clearly emulating others a bit too much.

Like J.Lo? It’s been alleged that her producers stole ideas from you.
I wouldn’t want to comment on that. Sorry, just trying to abide by the laws here.

Is it true you let fans on your Web site pick the songs you sing in concert?
Yes, it’s whatever comes in the top 15. I don’t live on the Internet. I give them things like tickets, but for me to read everybody’s opinion night and day would not be good.

But you do actually post messages from time to time, right?
Yeah, that would be me.

Is it every a little weird being that accessible to your fans?
I have a Jack Russell who’s so cute. There’s this one girl in Japan who dresses up like my dog and comes to concerts. This girl has a Web site devoted to him. So that’s pretty amusing.

How much does being in the spotlight – to the extent where people dress up like your dog – make it hard for you to date?
I’m in a weird position because I started doing this so young and was so secluded, and then I was in a relationship with a much older person. I’ve never really dated. I’ve experienced people hitting on me, obviously.

How do they usually go about it?
People come up to me and ask to marry me. But it’s not that hard. Just strike up a conversation! I can talk to just about anyone. It’s not about the who’s who of my address book. It’s about who’s fun, who’s cool.

Then how about a date with us? Karaoke maybe?
It’d be fun to walk in, do it, and see everyone’s reaction. It might be something I should do.

So you don’t necessarily only want to date other celebrities?
With another celebrity, there are egos. It’s like, “Which fan came up to me and asked for an autograph and didn’t ask you?” Who really cares? It’s not about how many magazine covers I can get on with this person.

Do average guys ever hit on you?
I don’t know. Do whistling and catcalls count?

Vital Stats: Born March 27, 1970, in Huntington, New York. “I’ve been singing since I was four. My mother was an opera singer and a vocal coach, and we both pretty much knew I had a natural talent for music. Writing songs was my creative outlet. Whenever there was anything difficult going on, I turned to writing as escapism.”

Her fairy tale story: "My shoe broke onstage twice on this tour. It was very Cinderella! One night I noticed that the heel had broken off. I was hopping on one leg, trying to finish the song and laughing. So I just threw it out to the audience and gave it to a fan, then I broke the other shoe and finished the song barefoot."

Driving herself crazy: “Being chauffeured around becomes mundane. I actually hate limos. I love to drive, even though I’m not a very good driver.”

Good sport: “I’m a fast runner. But when it comes to organized sports, I’m not good. I’m like, ‘Why is this person running toward me and what do I do now? Which goalie am I protecting?’ My brain doesn’t work that way. I know guys want to play basketball with their girlfriends, so I should pretend that I’m good at it, but the truth is I suck. I’m looking for someone to teach me.”

What she wants in a man: “Definitely a sense of humor. If somebody just sits there and talks about mundane subjects, they’re just boring as hell. Why bother?”

■ " Intimate Evening " With Fans Suits Her

Stars who exist in the multiplatinum, genre-spanning realm of Mariah Carey are conditioned to think big. But for her 2003 North American tour, the songstress has learned about downsizing. Carey had already announced a series of arena dates when, one day at an amusement park, she encountered a fan who expressed disappointment.
"I have a really close, interactive relationship with my fans," the 33-year-old Carey says, "and I knew that she was one of those fans who's really involved and wants all the information and everything. She was telling me that she'd seen me before in concert, in a big place, and she didn't really feel the experience.
"That made me think," the singer-songwriter says. "I wanted to do this so that the fans can feel like they've really had the experience of being there with me and having an intimate evening." Besides, Carey adds, she had already started rehearsing for the larger-venue show - which she did perform in Korea and Japan - and she was finding it "uninspiring". "It was like a rehearsing of what I've done before," she says, "which wasn't what I wanted to do."
The new model for the North American shows comes from Carey's past. She was inspired by memories of her 1992 MTV "Unplugged" concert, which became a triple-platinum album and launched her chart-topping cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There". "That was a very intimate performance," Carey recalls. "I didn't even know it was going to be an album - the cool thing was, people got to see me perform in an intimate setting. I'd never performed live like that, ever, and I think people who went to that show still have the memory and talk to me about it, that they enjoyed that type of venue with me."
SDSU's Open Air Theatre, where Carey performs tomorrow in her first-ever San Diego appearance, seats just under 4,800. "So the way I look at this tour is sort of like 'Unplugged' meets cabaret," she concludes, "because we've got a big production in terms of the dancing and the whole kind of cabaret atmosphere, but also it doesn't take itself too seriously. And it's not like I take myself too seriously out there, either."
Carey has the credentials to be as serious as she wants, of course. The Long Island-born daughter of opera singer Patricia Carey, she emerged from singing backup for Brenda K. Starr to win a Grammy Award as Best New Artist for her nine-times-platinum debut album, "Mariah Carey" (1990).
The rest of the decade was marked by a series of achievements as wide-ranging as Carey's seven-octave voice, which includes a piercing upper register that detractors sometimes liken to a dog whistle. Nevertheless, Carey's 11 albums have sold more than 140 million units worldwide and logged 15 No. 1 hits on the Billboard charts, giving her more cumulative weeks at No. 1 than any other artist in history.
From her 2002 album "Charmbracelet", the latest single is Carey's rendition of Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartache" (1995). "A lot of people didn't even know that song," she says with a laugh. "People from the label were like, 'What song is this?,' because it's not like it was 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' (1995) or 'Photograph' (1995). It was more obscure, but it's a great song."

■ DEF LEPPARD About Mariah

The band Def Leppard whose single "Bringing on the Heartbreak" Mariah covered on Charmbracelet gecovert obviously really like Mariah's version. Here's an excerpt from an article in "The Gazette":

"Considering his not-so-latent pop side, it's not surprising Collen is all for Mariah Carey's recent revival of Def Leppard's Bringin'on the Heartbreak (from 1981`s High `n` Dry) - a cover some fans have considered an act of high treason.
"You get e-mails from fans, and they go, It's disgusting, it's terrible. I said, No - you've got to realize that she's on our side. Someone's actually out there promoting one of our songs. You should give her all the help she can get."
"Ultimately, it's just a great honour for us (if) anyone does that - and does a real genuine version, not recording the song and making fun of the band, like the Michael Jackson thing by Alien Ant Farm (Smooth Criminal). With Mariah it was a genuine version of our song. I actually think that's a huge compliment."

■ This Diva Isn't Taking Rabbits On Tour With Her

It is truly inspiring to see Mariah Carey, 33, bounce back so brilliantly after all the hard times. Just a few months ago, she downsized her arena tour to give fans a chance to see her in a more intimate environment. And even though her latest album, "Charmbracelet", has already sold 1 million copies since its December release, she just rereleased it, making it even better than before with more songs and pictures and everything. And what about her amazing new single? A cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' On the Heartbreak". That's right. Mariah Carey is pretty much totally 100 percent back. She plays the Paramount in Oakland on Wednesday and Friday.

How was your vacation?
My vacation was good, thank you. I was in St. Bart's working out, torturing myself with my trainer. The cool thing is we do water aerobics, and I love the water. I'm like a mermaid, basically, so it doesn't even feel like working out.

I wondered what you did to entertain yourself after you already jet-skied, scuba dived and dangled out of a helicopter.
Exactly. Clearly, I love the water, and I'm no stranger to a water toy.

How does that work out on tour?
It's not that easy. It's not like I can bring a baby pool and do my water aerobics in there.

Sure you can.
You think? Don't tempt me because I have to do it.

You can put a pool right next to the rabbits.
Oh yeah, the rabbits, of course. What is this about rabbits? I heard about that. Somebody said I had rabbits with me somewhere or something?

That's right.
Yeah, that would be not true. That would be one of those lies like I don't walk on carpeting.

Everyone makes up the best lies about you.
I know. I think it's the thing to do.

If there really was a person like what you're supposed to be that would be awesome.
Wouldn't that person be incredible? But I'm just not her.

What's your favorite late-night television?
I don't know because I barely have time to watch TV. I think it's the "Nick at Night" type things.

Like "Gilligan's Island"?
Yeah.

On your Web site it said that if you ever had a daughter you would name her Ginger.
My dog's name is Ginger, so I'm going to have to rethink that.

Because your daughter probably wouldn't really appreciate having the same name as your dog.
Exactly. I can just picture her growing up being, "She named me after a dog!"

Do you ever watch the Home Shopping Network?
Yeah, but I'll be buying everything. The other day they had this food processor on there, and I was like, that looks really amazing. But then I was, like, this is such nonsense. They're just trapping me with this infomercial. But I was telling my housekeeper, "Order this food processor!" Like I'm ever in the kitchen processing food myself.

When was the last time you made dinner?
I have lived in this (New York) apartment for two years now, and I still haven't cooked myself. When I go away, like at Christmas time, then I cook. You know what's funny? I am a good cook, though. I got it from my father.

What's your specialty?
Linguine with white clam sauce.

You're not afraid the clams will bite you?
Well, usually I'm a little lazy, so I have somebody else shuck the clams for me because you can't use canned clams. That would not be stellar. But, yeah, we do that. And I also do a really good red sauce, a marinara sauce.

What do all the people that follow you around day to day do, anyway?
It's not day to day. If I had that when I wasn't working, that would not be a cute moment.

I probably shouldn't believe all the crazy things I always read about you.
Please don't. I mean, you can if it's entertaining to you. This one is entertaining to me.

This interview is going to set the record straight on everything, including the rabbits.
OK, cool. I like that.

■ St. Louis Concert Review

I can’t describe how grateful I am yet again had such an incredible opportunity to meet Mariah – and even more beautifully: to see and hear her sing. After all, that’s what makes her such a big part of my life. So here’s what happened. We went to the Fox Theatre at about 2 in the afternoon. We saw the trucks unload and people moving in and out. At about 5 PM Mariah’s band, dancers and background singers arrived, and shortly after that a black stretch limo pulled up. And there she was. We could only wave to her and call her name, but she waved back and had a big smile on her face. We could see that she had a leash in her hand and that could only mean that Jack was there with her. She looked great, her blond hair put up and some fashionable sun glasses on.
Only a few hours later it was time to go inside. I picked up my backstage passes and was anxiously waiting for the line to move. Honey and I had prepared a huge banner saying: “German Lambs in da House – Honey & Sabine” and we were trying to get this in. After insisting they let me take it in. We found our seats and I started feeling really strange. I wasn’t nervous, but it felt overwhelming. I knew then, as the lights went out shortly after 8 PM that I was going to have the most amazing night with Mariah! People jumped to their feet, looking back and forth, seeking for where Mariah was going to make her entrance. The big canvas on the stage with the oriental design was all red and yellow lights… they projected a movie sequence of big cities along to bits of Mariah’s songs (of which most of them she was going to perform later). Then the intro of “Looking In” started which led into “Heartbreaker”. And there she was. People got really excited and started screaming, I had to fight the tears to because I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to hear her sing again. So beautifully. She was led along the aisle and when she got on stage she sang part of the remix. I just fixated my eyes on her… how beautiful she was in her short pink glitter dress. It was amazing. When she finished she had a big smile on her face and stood and soaked up the cheering. She deserved it. Right after that she performed “Dreamlover” and people kept dancing and cheering. She then sat down on a big armchair and introduced “Through the Rain” as the first single of her new album. And it was beautiful how she hit all those notes – and I was amazed, because she sat in that chair belting her heart out! After “Through the Rain” she stood center stage and performed “My All” with a little alteration like in the dance remix and people loved it! The dancers were amazing during the dance remix. Mariah changed outfits and the stage was transformed in a kind of circus. The Marionette Show (with the reversed E ) started and Mariah sang “Clown”. It rocked! She wore the beautiful golden dress and looked amazing. After that she said Hello to St. Louis and mentioned Honey B. Fly (a couple of times during the show actually) and said they were going to do a first-timer on the tour tonight. The fans had voted for “One Sweet Day” and she introduced BoyzIIMen who then appeared on the big video screen (it was the video for the song) and Mariah stood left stage listening and then singing with them in unison. It was beautiful. Really amazing. Mariah made another exit to change and the video for “Honey” started after the canvas had been let down again. Mariah appeared wearing the blue mini dress and danced. I thought she was looking very serious doing it. But cute, too. After the song again she left the stage quickly and left it to the dancers. The house was turning into a club when the video for “I know what you want” with Busta Rhymes appeared. Mariah made only a quick appearance at the last part of the song coming out from the left of the curtain wearing her cute little Harley Davidson ensemble. She had some pretty good moves too! People loved it! A big highlight came next: Mariah coming down from the top of the stage on a white draped curtain wearing a heavenly white strapless mini dress. She wore a head set performing “Subtle Invitation”. The swing came down to the piano and she put on this amazing club performance of the song, really sexy. For the last part of the song she came down from the piano and ran from left to right being very emotional about what she actually said in the song. It was fantastic! Like she was actually talking to that guy in the song. The grand piano still in center of the stage, Mary Ann, Trey, and the other two background singers came closer. Mariah introduced “My Saving Grace” as her life story put to music. In the background photos of her as a little child, a teenager, young person in the music biz, clippings of her breakdown were projected. The song was amazing… it almost felt like worship how people put their hands in the air and sang along. A very powerful performance. One of my favorite moments of the concert followed when Mariah was then introducing the band. She started with the piano player. Singing jazzy, jamming with the band, she came up with the words right at that moment. It made me wish I could hear her sing jazz more often! It was amazing! She laughed a lot, told Trey to stop laughing , hit very very very low notes when she introduced the bass player, almost forgot to introduce the keyboard player, and had so much fun with the background singers, “Eat, drink, dance, whatever!” They are fantastic too! Wow, what voices! She joked around with Trey… sang in a very sensual voice to and about him – and then they just cracked up when she got a little sign saying “Between *picture of a fish* bread” so everyone did the South Carolina joke. It was hilarious! They are such good friends. Both sang “Ill be there” after that which was quite a singalong tune for everyone in the house. I remember when Trey hit the very high note that Mariah was suddenly jumping up and down, cheering like everyone else at that moment. It was hilarious seeing her that enthusiastic about their own song! Then Trey and the girls performed “Friend of Mine” and I was really impressed with the performance. The song is fabulous! Trey thanked everyone dearly and said he really means it when he said he loved the audience. “Bringin” on the Heartbreak” was next. Mariah came down the stairs wearing the beautiful dark red dress and pulled up a rocking performance. I think it turned out to be a lot of people’s favorite tune. You could see fans waving Sunflowers and a lot of banners. Yet another costume change during a jam by Vernon ‘Ice’ Black for an encore of the song without Mariah. Then ODB appeared on the screen and people jumped up on their feet! It was “New York in da house”! Mariah wore pink satin shorts and a top and did the chair dance like during the years before. You could hardly tell she was lip syncing. It was great! Right after the song she did “Always be my Baby” and what a joy in the house!! A guy with a sign saying “Can I get a hug?” was led on stage and got a big hug from Mariah. I believe another girl did too. Then they threw in white and orange balls into the audience and it turned out to be quite a party for everyone including Mariah. She was so close to everyone that night! One of my favorites followed… Mariah sang “Make it Happen”. It was church in the house! Again, almost worship like people were clapping their hands along with Mariah and sang and shouted and screamed. It was overwhelming. Then the lights went off… but the show wasn’t over yet. After two minutes or so Mariah returned wearing the gorgeous feathery gown singing “Vision of Love”. And it was nothing compared to the “Rainbow Tour” performance. It was crisp and clear and you could just watch her in awe. I was. Mariah’s last song was “Hero”. Everyone, not just the fans, was probably more excited about this song than anything else. It was the grand finale. Mariah made her exit to the “Butterfly (Outro)” and waved and blew kisses to the audience. The lights went off and her master of ceremony, the clown, put a sketch board with Mariah on it right into the center of the stage – and that’s when the lights went on and I felt – how short it was! But it was a 105 minute set, but it was so well sequenced without any slow moments that the time flew by fast.

Then the Meet & Greet people gathered in the back of the theatre. There must have been more than 50 people. Twenty of us alone were Honey B. Fly members. It was so great meeting everyone. We were led downstairs into a small room with snacks and drinks, and waited there for a few moments. It didn’t feel like a very long time because everyone was in high spirits and just really enjoying themselves… it felt really relaxing. Then they split us up in 2 groups, of whom the first group was let in. They came back out saying how awesome it was meeting Mariah. When it was our turn we were already told at the door to the small theatre room that no cameras and no autographs were allowed due to the lack of time. So we all entered the room and walked up to Mariah who was standing there. Very tall and slim, and just wonderfully welcoming. Everyone gathered around her in a circle, and just chatted. Mariah was showered with presents, letters and books (she also received the St. Louis Fanbracelet) so she had to put it down twice because it was just too much. She was wearing a short denim skirt, and a tiny white top with colorful print on it. When I got to talk to her and told her that we are the “German lambs”, she looked me in the eyes asking “You used to have an accent”. And I said, “yes, you told me the same thing in Dallas in October at the meet & greet” and then I showed her the pictures of the two of us there and she said “Oh”! It was really funny, and I am so honored that Mariah noticed that. I told her that she had to do with my progress in English too… she said “aww” and looked at me really sweetly. I handed her my letter, told her that I had made a CD commemorating her stay in St. Louis and I told her how I loved the concert. I could hug her, too. It felt so good. We took two pictures together, the whole group of us. Then we got to talk some more although they wanted us to hurry up. But nobody rushed, it felt really calm. I asked if I could get a quick autograph and Wayne said “Yes, quickly” and I thanked him and then Mariah signed the picture for me. And I thanked her and gave her another gentle hug. I told her that I am going to all of her concerts in Germany and that everyone there is really looking forward to it. And she looked at me excitedly. I then left the room and went upstairs and outside with everybody else. Shortly after that Mariah left the building. We could hear Jack bark and see her getting into the limo. A lot of people were there, and they actually put up a barricade on the street so the limo could get by quickly. I managed to see Mariah as they were driving by slowly with the window down. And I even got to take a picture of her and Jack. It was hilarious! We all waved goodbye and saw the limo appear into the night.
It was one of the most amazing nights of my life, and I want to thank Honey B. Fly and everyone at MonarC, and mostly Mariah for making this an incredible incredible experience. I can’t wait to see her in Germany and I wish her and everyone else all the best for this wonderful tour. It’s the best ever! It rocks!

■ Mariah Carey To Sing For Bond 21?

After the oh-so-unlikely rumour of Pink being in talks with producers regarding the next Bond film two weeks ago, CBn can report that Mariah Carey is now supposedly meeting with MGM and Eon.

Rumours circulating in the US suggest that Carey has already agreed to sing the lead track from the 21st Bond film, according to Dotmusic News.
The film - which is scheduled to be Pierce Brosnan's last in the role - is (apparently) in the early stages of pre-production but Carey could come on board if she gets a cameo role herself. Dotmusic reports that Carey is interested in a part in the movie on a similar standing as Madonna's brief recent appearance in Die Another Day, which didn't go down to well with fans.

"Mariah has had meetings with producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson," an unnamed source is reported to have said.

"She was asked if she'd consider singing the theme tune for Bond 21. Mariah said she wanted a part in the new film although the story hasn't been discussed yet."
Just the sort of role she would need to kick-start her flagging career.

If the film is tipped for a 2005 release then this all seems very premature. In fact, it's premature even for a 2004 release, so CBn sincerely suggests as with the Pink report, that you treat this as a highly unlikely rumour. However, whatever happens, Commanderbond.net will keep you informed.

「Fantasy」「Always Be My Baby」「Make It Happen」と続く頃にはマライアの調子も絶好調になり、ステージを歩き回って客席に手を振りながら歌いまくる。

Busta Rhymesとのデュエット曲「I Know What You Want」とDef Leppardのカバー曲「Bringin' on the Heartbreak」が共にチャートを上昇しているのは、大きなプラスと言える。

そのかわりに1時間45分に及ぶショーは、「I'll Be There」「Fantasy」「Make It Happen」「Vision of Love」「Hero」など、ヒット曲のオンパレードだった。

■ Mariah Showcases Eminem Puppet, Avoids All Things Glitter At Chicago Tour Stop

Lest anyone had forgotten Mariah Carey did time in at least one psych unit following a physical and emotional collapse two years ago, the 33-year-old Long Islander was all ready to remind us that even divas have breaking points.

On Tuesday night at the United Center, two giant video screens projected photos of Carey as a wide-eyed schoolgirl, a diva prodigy and, later, a spent superstar. While Carey sang the gospel-tinged ballad "My Saving Grace" — one of five songs she performed from 2002's Charmbracelet during the night — tabloid headlines touting "Mariah's Breakdown" flashed before our eyes before eventually giving way to images of a beaming Carey. Onstage, her expression was much the same. After a career cul de sac — the breakdown and the disastrous releases of her film Glitter and the titular album — Carey had something to smile about.

With both her duet with Busta Rhymes, "I Know What You Want," and her cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" burning up the charts, Carey is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Still, even Carey is feeling the effects of a soggy summer touring market. After booking a tour of 15,000-seat arenas across the U.S., Carey's reps said she would instead play smaller venues to guarantee more "intimate" performances.

In Chicago, one of the few cities that didn't demand a venue change, the only thing that made the performance intimate was the low turnout. The entire upper tier was curtained off, nearly half the loge empty and scalpers were selling $75 tickets for the first 10 rows for well under face value.

None of this seemed to bother Carey. Knifing her way through outstretched arms and flanked by bodyguards, Carey entered the stage from the back of the venue while singing the bubbly "Heartbreaker," from 1999's Rainbow. Wearing a sexy pink and silver sequined cocktail dress — her first of eight outfits of the evening — Carey's mocha-rich voice resonated above the shrieks of a predominantly female audience. The screams got louder when Carey punctuated a note with goose-pimply shrill, as she did on "Dream Lover" and "Bringin' on the Heartbreak."

For the fairly ornate stage show, Carey employs a heterogeneous ensemble to handle spine-defying dance moves, which becomes frequent fodder during Carey's myriad set-interrupting attire alterations. She herself gets into the groove with an unsuitable-for-children-under-17 writhe during "I Know What You Want."

For a while, Carey matched every costume change with a set change, as her art-deco set segued into "The Marionette Show" circus atmosphere. Both a play on her name and The Eminem Show — the performer of which was Carey's purported paramour — this was Carey's chance for payback. After Eminem dissed her on his track "Superman" ("What you tryin' to be my new wife?/ What you, Mariah?") and later in an issue of Rolling Stone ("I just don't like her as a person."), Carey recorded the Eminem-inspired "Clown" for Charmbracelet, although she has always been coy when asked if the song was about Mr. Mathers. There was no denying Slim Shady was the clown here for our amusement Tuesday night, though.

While Carey sat with legs crossed and sang, "You should've never intimated we were lovers/ When you know very well we never even touched each other," two masked men wearing pin-striped suits and standing on stilts pulled a female dancer/human puppet sporting a shaggy blonde wig and Detroit Pistons jersey (get it?) to and fro with an array of large ribbons. When the song ended, a giant screen flashed "The Marionette Show" (with the same Eminem Show-style reversed lettering) again. Carey grinned and said, "It's all in fun. We're just having a good time with the show up here."

Wisely, Carey neglected to play anything from her nadir, 2001's Glitter, throughout the hour-and-45-minute set. Instead, she loaded up on the hits ("I'll Be There," "Fantasy," "Make It Happen," "Vision of Love" and "Hero"), and ingratiated herself to the Windy City, calling Chicago "the best audience I've had to date." True, this was only the second show of her North American tour, but she did recently return from a tour of Japan. But here she's sure everyone's still speaking her language.

■ Mariah Takes The Plunge

■ Mariah Carey ready to fight for role in movie

Reports that Mariah Carey will be playing a boxing manager in her next big-screen project, "The Sweet Science," turn out to be premature -- and wrong, according to the film's producer, Anthony Esposito. The multiple Grammy-winning singer will instead be playing a boxer herself -- one who steps into the ring with real-life lady boxing champion Laila Ali, daughter of none other than boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

"Mariah was really keen on playing this role. At first, she was going to play the part of the boxing manager, Gloria, but she insisted on playing the boxer. She's been taking boxing lessons as part of her training," says Esposito, who is producing the film with Andrea Kreuzhage, through their Leading Pictures production company.

Esposito also produced the Mariah Carey/Mira Sorvino starrer "Wisegirls," which ended up going from Sundance Festival kudos to cable television release.

Mariah will also record a soundtrack for "The Sweet Science" romantic comedy, which will begin production in New Jersey and Canada on Nov. 10, once she finishes her current "Charmbracelet" tour.

Real estate tycoon Donald Trump has also attached himself to "The Sweet Science." Declares Esposito, "Donald is investing in the film, and he'll make a cameo as well."
And so much for the view that remarkably resilient Mariah's film career was dead on the arrival of her 2001 debut, the critically panned box-office bomb "Glitter."
