２８日に緊急来日した米歌手マライア・キャリー（３５）は、インターナショナル・ビデオ・アイコン賞を獲得。レッドカーペットでは背中がパックリあいたドレス、ステージでは大きくスリットが入ったドレスで「Ｗｅ　Ｂｅｌｏｎｇ　Ｔｏｇｅｔｈｅｒ」を歌い観客を魅了。「１６回目の来日で、すごく意味のある賞をいただいて光栄です」と笑顔を振りまいたが、レッドカーペットでは予定より１時間以上遅れ、ステージ後の会見にも３０分以上遅れ、会見上にはマライア専用のスポットライトも登場させるなど、超ＶＩＰ待遇を見せつけた。

■ 安室４年連続受賞！オレンジレンジも３冠−ＭＴＶ　ＶＭＡ



年間で最も優秀な音楽クリップを決定し、表彰する「ＭＴＶ　ビデオ　ミュージック　アワード　ジャパン２００５」が２９日、千葉・浦安市の東京ベイＮＫホールで行われ、安室奈美恵（２７）やマライア・キャリー（３５）ら国内外のトップアーティストが出演した。

安室は「最優秀Ｒ＆Ｂビデオ賞」と「アジア最優秀パフォーミング・アーティスト賞」の２冠を獲得し、史上初の４年連続受賞という快挙を達成した。特に「アジア−」は２月にスマトラ沖地震津波被災者救済のチャリティー公演での熱唱が評価されての受賞で、「アジアの皆さんに喜ばれる歌を歌っていきたい」と話した。７月１３日には１年半ぶりとなるオリジナル・アルバムを発売する。

一方、最新アルバム「ＭＩＭＩ」で約８年ぶりの全米チャート初登場１位の栄誉を引っさげ来日中のマライアは、「インターナショナル・ビデオ・アイコン賞」に輝き、「今度は日本語を覚えて、喋りたい」と親日派ぶりをアピールした。

Island Def Jamグループ、Universal Motown Records、Interscope Geffen A&Mなどを傘下に持つフランスのメディア巨大複合企業ビベンディ・ユニバーサル社の業績アップに、50セント(50 Cent)とマライア・キャリー(Mariah Carey)が大きく貢献していると、Digital Music Newsが報じている。

4月の時点でトリプル・ミリオン(300万枚)を達成した50セントの"The Massacre"と、全米発売1週間で40万枚以上のセールスを記録して話題を呼んだマライア・キャリーの"The Emancipation of Mimi"(邦題『MIMI』)が、ビベンディ・ユニバーサル社のこの四半期の収益を昨年の同時期比で2億5千250万ドル(約270億円)もアップさせたとして、社報で発表されるなど異例評価を受けることとなったという。

Welcome Back Mimi! はい、ということで今日Pm4:30LAから長い飛行を終えこの日本に到着したお姫様。お出迎えに行かれたファンの皆さんお疲れ様でした。今日のお姫様は先日のGMAの衣装と同じブルーの編み上げワンピースで登場。ちょっとエレガントなお姫様でした。ちょっとお疲れか眠たそうな感じもしましたが長い花道を歩きたくさんの詰め掛けた人たちに手を振ったりサインしたりといつものようにサービス旺盛で空港を後にしました。今回はWBTが歌って出迎えする予定でしたがちょっと中途半端なお祝いになってしまい心残りですが、お姫様は喜んでくれていたのでまぁいいかな。っでいち早くこの空港での様子をファイルUPしましたのでお楽しみください。デジカメで撮ったので15秒ずつしか見れませんが...。

■ Mariah Nets 16th Hot 100 No. 1



With the 2-1 ascension of "We Belong Together" in the song's eighth week on Billboard's Hot 100, Mariah Carey notches her 16th No. 1 on the singles chart. In addition, the track, which is also the Hot 100's greatest airplay gainer, moves 2-1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart to become her ninth chart topper there.

As Fred Bronson reports in this week's "Chart Beat" column, Carey has not been on top of the Hot 100 since 2000 with "Thank God I Found You." The last time she landed there with a purely solo track (with no other featured artists) was in 1998 with "My All."

Carey's move to No. 1 comes as Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" drops to No. 2 after four weeks on top. But Stefani's not done yet, as "Hollaback" remains in the catbird seat on Billboard's Pop 100 chart for a fifth week.

■ スヌープが絶賛 「マライアは綿棒みたいに柔らかい!」

マライア・キャリーが何年にも渡って数々のMCたちと曲作りをしてきたことは有名だ。今は亡きオール・ダーティ・バスタードからジェイダキス、モブ・ディープに至るまで、バラエティに富んだ面々との共演を果たしてきた。しかし、キング・オブ・カリフォルニアことスヌープ・ドッグによる賞賛の言葉を聞いたら、彼以上にマライアとのコラボレーションを喜ぶラッパーはいないのではないかと思われる。

「彼女はスゲー柔らかいんだ」、マライアとのコラボを思い出しながら、明るい、うっとりするような声でスヌープは語った。「美人だしな。彼女にはいつもこの話をするんだけど、俺がムショに入ってた頃、『Vision of Love』が世界で一番ホットな曲だったんだ。俺はいつも『マライアに会いてー！』って言ってたんだよ。だから彼女のアルバム作りに参加したんだ。今回はファレルが段取りをつけてくれたおかげで、彼女との共演が再び実現することになった」。

2人がコラボレーションした曲「Say Somethin’」でも、スヌープからマライアへの賞賛はやむことがない。初めて曲を聞いた時のことを、スヌープは「だっせービートで、ドスドスやってた」と振り返る。「で、『分かったよ、その曲を俺によこしな、M.C.（= マライア・キャリー）』みたいなノリで俺はその曲をスタジオに持ち帰り、俺風のスタイルに作り変えたんだ」。

「完成した曲を彼女のために披露したら、『この曲大好きだわ!』って言ってくれたんだ。俺は『OK、ハグしてくれないか、ベイビー』って言ったさ。彼女はまるで綿棒みたいに柔らかかった! 神に感謝するぜ! ジーザス、M.C.！俺は…」ここで彼は一瞬止まってこう言った。「誰か止めてくれよ」。

マライアの所属レーベルもスヌープのアレンジした曲がかなり気に入ったようで、当初はアルバム『MIMI』からのファースト・シングルを、「It’s Like That」の代わりに「Say Somethin’」にしようとしていたという。

マライアは去る3月、この件について、「（Island/Def Jamの会長）L.A.リードはこの曲に入れ込んで、すっかりファースト・シングルにする気になっていたわ」と明かしていた。「みんな大満足で、やる気満々だった。でも私的に『曲は最高。だけど、分からない。曲の構成が私にとっては違いすぎるんじゃないかな』という感じだったの。テクニカルにどうこう、って言うわけじゃなく、コード変更とかフィーリングが、すごくファレルっぽいのよね。彼の音はかなりジャズっぽい所を狙ってて、そこが素敵なの。彼の音楽性に合わせることはできるけど、自分が自然に向かうところとは違うって思った」。

M.C.とスヌープ・ドッグは、今週にもロサンゼルスで再会し、「Say Somethin’」 のミュージック・ビデオ撮影を行う。スヌープはこのビデオで、いつもよりシャープに決めるつもりだと意気込みをみせた。

「セクシーで秘密めいた男にならなくちゃな。顔も赤ちゃんのお尻みたいに滑らかに整えないと」とスヌープ。「爪はやすりで整えて、髪型も決めていくぜ。M.C.、お前に何をしてやれるか俺には分からないけど、この先忘れられないような、本当にイカシたことをやるつもりでいるのさ。俺たちならきっとうまくいく。２人の名前を歴史に残すんだ」。

■  'Hits' Predicts "Mimi" To Finish At 168k-173k For #3

FEARLESS FORECAST: The way things look now, System of a Down will move a total of 450k-460k units, making the “Armenian U2” the week’s runaway chart-topper. Behind System, we expect Toby Keith to finish at 270k-280k for #2, a still-strong Mariah Carey to do 168k-173k, pulling ahead of last week’s #1, the Dave Matthews Band, who should tally 150k-160k, with Motown's Kem rounding out the Top 5 at 140k-150k. Hello! Yeah, just calling to say hey and thank you guys so much for everything. I left a message on the other site as well, but I heard that today is a special day, I was told by a little birdie about that and I wanted to say thank you to all you guys, for everything that you're doing and just the support with "We Belong Together", 'cause the song really really means a lot to me, as do all of you.

And, we're just sitting here, just thinking about you, looking at a couple of different books that I've received lately, and they are spewing about the room. Nice and festive. I just wanted to tell you that you are the best fans in the entire universe but you already knew that, and you make me happy! And I love you, appreciate you and enjoy you much as always, always, always. All you guys are amazing, MTV, TRL, BET, 106 & Park - all the moments, darling, moments! fabulous!

■ マライア・キャリー　新作ビデオでウェディング・ドレス姿を披露

いよいよ来週29日に開催される「MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2005」で、ライブ・パフォーマンスを披露することが決定したマライア・キャリー。現在MTVでは、彼女の最新ミュージック・ビデオ「We Belong Together」をオンエア中だ。前作「It's Like That」と同時に撮影された今作は、そのストーリーも繋がっているようだ。

マライアは新作ビデオについて、「テーマは『ウェディング』よ。このビデオを見れば『It's Like That』のビデオが結婚式の前夜祭だってことが理解できるようになっているわ」と説明。今作では純白のウエディング・ドレス姿のマライアが印象的だが、テーマが固まったのは何と撮影2日前だったそうだ。

「撮影前ギリギリにビデオのテーマが決まったから、最後の最後まで私のドレスが見つかるか、皆スゴク心配していたのよ」というマライア。最終的に本番で身に着けたのは、なんとマライア自身が結婚した時に着用したウェディング・ドレスなのだとか。

WHERE SHE BELONGS: A 3-2 move for "We Belong Together" (Island) pushes Mariah Carey to her highest position on Billboard's Hot 100 since she topped the chart in February 2000 with "Thank God I Found You." Carey was last No. 2 in August 2001 with "Loverboy." While she's far enough away from Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" (Interscope) to not be a serious challenger for No. 1 next week, Carey could be looking at her 16th chart-topper as soon as two weeks from now.

Carey's chart climb had been aided by an abundance of radio spins. On the Hot 100 Airplay chart, "We Belong Together" rises 2-1, becoming Carey's first chart-topper on this survey since "One Sweet Day" ruled for 13 weeks in 1995-96.

■ "We Belong Together" - #1 Most Played Song In The U.S.!!!

Congratulations Mariah and fans! "We Belong Together" jumps to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay Chart. The last Mariah song that held the top position on this chart was "One Sweet Day" in 1996.

"We Belong Together" has increased its airplay by 26.7 million audience impressions and gained 2,286 spins since last week. The total audience for the song is: 132,070,900.

On the Hot Digital Songs chart, "We Belong Together" jumps from #11 to #9 with a 10% sales increase. It's sold 22,471 copies this week for a total of 89,279 copies sold.

As you know, the Billboard Hot 100 combines digital downloads and airplay. Despite the #1 position on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and due to the relatively low downloads, "We Belong Together" is still behind Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl". Here is the breakdown of the gap between the two songs:

■ Mariah Tapes Oprah, Confirms "Shake It Off" As 3rd Single

Earlier today, Mariah has taped her appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show in Chicago. The episode doesn't have an air date yet but is presumed to air as the show's season finale.

Mariah wore a blue dress as she performed "We Belong Together" for an enthusiastic crowd of fans.

For the short interview, Mariah wore a short black dress and introduced the song she wrote for Paul, the young boy whom she surprised last month in a special "Dreams Come True" show. Paul then performed the song titled "When I Pray".

Below are pictures that Alex and Dan took of Mariah leaving the taping. Alex managed to hand Mariah a fanbook with appreciation notes from fans regarding the new album.

Mariah and her background singer Trey Lorenz have also confirmed that "Shake It Off" is the 3rd single to come out from "The Emancipation of Mimi" and the music video for it will be shot next week in Los Angeles, California.

■ Mariah Carey Set To Perform At The 2005 MTV Movie Awards

MTV: Music Television today announced that Mariah Carey has joined Eminem and Nine Inch Nails to complete the line-up of performers for 2005 MTV MOVIE AWARDS.

Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, the fourteenth annual awards show will air on June 9th at 8:30PM (ET/PT). The ceremony will tape on June 4th at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. More presenters, special guest appearances and award tributes will be announced shortly.

Performer and songwriter Mariah Carey exploded back onto the U.S. charts with her brand new Island Def Jam album, THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, and achieved the greatest first week sales of her career - at 403,755 units - earning a #1 debut on the Billboard 200 albums chart. ■ プロモーション来日急遽決定！

マライア・キャリーが5月末にプロモーション来日することが決定しました。アルバム『MIMI』をリリースした3月以来、2ヶ月振りの来日になります。今回の滞在期間中では「MTVビデオ・ミュージック・アワーズ・ジャパン2005」への出演他を予定しています。
「出演他」って...（笑）他に何を予定してるんでしょうか？殆ど滞在が1日ぐらいのものなのに....。雑誌の撮影とかやってもらいたいな...。あっ、そうそうDVD付限定盤ですがどうやらやっぱりJapan Tourにあわせて秋にリリースされる予定だそうです。ってことでお姫様、年内に3度来日ということになります。

いよいよ開催間近のMTVによる音楽授賞式「MTV Video Music Awards 2005」に、洋邦を代表するアーティストの出演が追加決定した。

■ マライア緊急来日！ＭＴＶのイベントに出演

米歌手、マライア・キャリー（３５）が５月２９日に千葉・浦安市の東京ベイＮＫホールで行われる「ＭＴＶビデオ・ミュージック・アワーズ・ジャパン２００５」に出演するため、緊急来日することが１７日、決まった。

マライアは８年ぶりの全米１位アルバムに輝いた「ＭＩＭＩ」をＰＲするため、３月末に来日したばかり。この出演のためだけに、たった２カ月で日本へ戻ってくる。２８日に千葉・成田空港に降り立ち、翌２９日に「ＭＩＭＩ」の収録曲から「ウイ・ビロング・トゥゲザー」を披露する予定。

ほかにも、ガレッジセールのゴリ（３２）扮する人気キャラクター、ゴリエが新ダンスのパフォーマンスをファンの前で初披露するなど話題満載だ。

OMG!OMG!OMGGGGGG!!! きゃ〜〜〜〜！急遽決定です。限定盤が延期未定になったのでもうぜったいあり得ないと思っていたのに...（苦笑）さて、こんな急な来日かなり困りました....。日本でレッドカーペットかぁ〜。ついに実現ですね。

はい、ということでリリース約1週前にして急遽延期未定になってしまったこのDVD付限定盤。（もぅ出さなくていいよ〜ぉ...）な〜んちゃって。当初Japan Tourが計画されていたため、急遽それにあわせて来日記念盤としてこの時期にリリースすることになっていたのですが4月にこのTour計画が延期になり調整される形になりなんとも中途半端なタイミングになり本当に出るのか微妙でしたが...（苦笑）だいたい出すのが遅いよね。今度は本当に出るのかわかりませんが出るとすれば今度はJapan Tourが決定した来日記念盤として出すはずです。

Mariah Carey became a household name in 1990 when she first hit the musical world. Never resting, she built upon her instantly successful self-titled debut album with a train of other successful albums. Her undeniable talent kept her on top of the music charts. There was lots of speculation prior to the release of Carey's latest CD, "The Emancipation of Mimi." After her 2001 release of "Glitter," the soundtrack to her critically bashed movie of the same title, critics and others lost faith in this musical queen of the '90's.

Despite the doubters, Mariah Carey has not magically lost her incredible vocal range, outstanding fan base or talent as a singer.

"The Emancipation of Mimi" is the No. 1 R&B/Hip-Hop album on the Billboard charts, and the video from her second single, "We Belong Together," made No. 1 on MTV's TRL within its first week on the show. A new favorite saying about Mariah Carey is "The Voice" is back. She sounds great, and appears to be much more confident about this album than her last ones. And, she seemed to be in good spirits for all her appearances.

Songs are upbeat

On a recent BET special, she joked that she was thinking about naming the CD "Unicorn" because everyone expected her to have one-word, girly titles for her albums. However, "The Emancipation of Mimi" seems to be working fine. She's created a good mix of upbeat songs and the ballads she sings so well. And she has worked with some old collaborators, (Trey Lorenz, Snoop Dogg and Jermaine Dupri), as well as some new ones, (Twista, Nelly and producers the Neptunes). When I first listened to this CD, (the first day it was released I rushed to get it) I knew I liked it, but the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. It starts off with her first single, "It's Like That," which is a dance track, and is followed by her second single, "We Belong Together."

"Say Somethin' " is the song featuring Snoop, and will most likely be her next single. It's also one of the songs produced by the Neptunes, and you can tell if you listen to the music. There are a couple of fun songs, and one or two that might make you want to cry.

■ Mariah Tripes On Ellen's Sutt For TV Appearance

Comedienne ELLEN DEGENERES saved MARIAH CAREY a few blushes on US TV on Friday (13MAY05) when she offered her her pinstriped suit when the singer's dress plans fell apart.

The pop star had planned to wear her prom dress for the interview part of her appearance on DeGeneres' daytime show, but decided it didn't look right and had no other outfit to wear.

So when DeGeneres offered to loan her one of her suits, Carey decided to try another style. She says, "I knocked on Ellen's door. I didn't know if she was gonna say, `Get out of here, whatever,' and I said, `Can I really borrow this suit?' "She was so nice and let me look through a bunch of different options... Thankyou to Ellen, stylist to the singers."

Lesbian DeGeneres was stunned by her guest's pinstriped look she wore the suit without a shirt underneath. The host quipped, "I didn't know it could be worn like that."

■ New Fan Book for Mariah for the Oprah Show!

Mariah will be back in Chicago to tape the Oprah show one more time next week, and this time will be a full hour show, where she will perform live!
I know how excited everyone must be about her success on "The Emancipation of Mimi" and how much you would like to congratulate her. Like myself, can't wait to see her and tell her how happy I am!

新生マライアことMIMI来日こぼれ話（3月28日〜4月1日）

● ヨーロッパでのプロモーション後、ロンドンから自家用ジェット機で15人＆衣装ケース50個とともにやって来たマライア・キャリー。実は乗り切らず、別便で送ってきた衣装ケースもあった....。

● ファン・イベントで着ていた真っ赤なタイト・ドレスは、実はその前日舞台のセットを見た専属スタイリストがピンときて、布を買出しに行って、ホテルの一室で一晩がかりで縫い上げたもの、まさに即席オートクチュール。ちなみにその方、大柄で迫力のある黒人男性で、ふたりのアシスタントが付いていたとはいえ、一晩で作り上げるとは天晴れ！

● そんなマライアが一度だけ可愛い行動をしてスタッフを驚かせたのは、CXフジテレビでの収録の帰りのこと。マライアの乗せたリムジンが急に街中で止まって、マライア本人が突然車から飛び出した。入っていったのはなんとマクドナルド。ちゃんと列に並んで自分のチーズバーガーとダイエットコークを注文。突然入ってきた世界のマライアに、店内のお客さんはびっくり。あわや大騒ぎのなる所をスタッフとボディーガードが収め、無事マライアを車に連れ帰った。日本のスタッフとしては、どうしてマライアが急にそういう行動に出たのか本当の理由はわからないそう。今回の5日間の日本滞在中で唯一買い物をしたのはこの時だけでした。

● 仕事に夢中になっているときは食事も殆どしないが、食べる時はちゃんと食べる。マライアには日本に来る時には決まって行っているお気に入りの鉄板焼屋さんがあって、大好物の神戸牛をおなか一杯食べてますが、定期便での来日の際は機内食はちょっと苦手という理由で、都内の某高級イタリアンで無理矢理お願いしてテイクアウトでパスタなどを持ち込んでいたのですが、今回は自家用ジェットということで、食事の問題はありませんでした。

▲ 「チョコレートが食べたくなったらとりあえずアイスキューブを口に入れる」のはマライア。なんでも、一つのアイスキューブを溶かすまでに体が消費するエネルギーは40カロリーもあるのだとか...これならお手頃で簡単に出来そう！( P.97 )

■ We Belong Together" jumps four spots to No. 3 in its 6th week on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart



On the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart, "We Belong Together" jumps from No. 6 to No. 2 with a 26.6 million increase in audience and 2,678 spin increase. Total Audience: 105,362,000. This makes "We Belong Together" the Greatest Gainer / Airplay this week (2nd time in 3 weeks!)

Mariah's last single that reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart was "Always Be My Baby" in 1996.

The two songs ahead of "We Belong Together" are:
1. Hollaback Girl, Gwen Stefani (#1 on Hot Digital Songs)

■ "Hits" Final Album Sales Tally: "Mimi" Hits 1,000,000

According to 'Hits Daily Double', "The Emancipation of Mimi" sells an incredible amount of 195,929 copies this week which brings the album's sales total to over one million copies in only four weeks!

This is Mariah's 3rd straight week at #2, falling behind a strong debut from Nine Inch Nails whose album "With Teeth" sells over 270,000 copies this week.

'Hits' also reports Mariah's album positions on the following retailers' top sellers lists:

Dimple Records: #2
Independent Records: #2
Hasting: #4
Newbury Comics: #8

Although the official sales for the album will be determined by SoundScan, "Hits Daily Double" is regarded to as a good and almost accurate measurement. The SoundScan figures apply to the Billboard charts and will be released later this week.

発売4週目にしてミリオンセールスを記録しました！1週目の40万枚ものセールスが1週分縮めたことになるわけですが、2週目からも毎週約20万のセールスを好調にキープしているのには驚きです。本当にすごいですよ〜、しかもまだシングルNo.1になってないのに。WBTには絶対にNo.1獲らせてあげたいですね〜！頑張れ、マライア！

マライア・キャリーは質問攻めに慣れている。「過労」による2001年の入院について、露出が多めのファッションについて、そして言うまでもなく、音楽界の最大のやり手との離婚について。

ポップ界で最大の声を持つマライアは、先日リリースされたニュー・アルバム『MIMI（原題：The Emancipation of Mimi）』によって新たな質問を集めている。MIMIとは一体誰なのか? なぜ解放（Emancipation）される必要があるのか? 何からの解放なのか? そして、最も重要なことに、このアルバムは神経衰弱後、「グリッター」後の彼女の復活を成功させることができるのだろうか? 前作『Charmbracelet』のように失敗に終わるのではないだろうか…?

実際に、マライア自身も同じことを考えている。彼女は今回のインタビュー中、話を中断して、自分はすべてにおいてうまく行っているかどうかを確認してきた。「あなたはキャリアにおける様々なステージにいるセレブたちを何年もインタビューしてきたと思うけど、名声によってダメになってしまう人を見抜くことはできる?」とマライアは聞く。「私は大丈夫な方の一人かしら?」

大丈夫だと言われると、マライアは自身の意見や才能について以前よりも自信を持っているのだと述べた。それはもちろん、彼女こそがMIMIだからだ。彼女は幼少期のニックネームを使って、一人の人間としてのマライアと、セレブとしてのマライアの間に距離を置いた。元夫、トミー・モットーラが築いた檻の中の歌姫としての足枷を振り払い、本当に解放された気分だと言う。「10年前は、あまり意見を言うことを許されていなかった」と彼女は言う。「『はい、ニュー・アルバムでは歌っています、ありがとう』くらいしか言えなかったの」。

20年間連れ添ってきた妻がいたモットーラとの不倫の交際の末、1993年に挙式をあげ、彼がCEOだったレコードレーベル（ソニー）に所属して歌っていた日々から、本当に色々なことがあった。モットーラとの日々は、マライアのキャリアを築いた――バック・シンガーだった彼女を1990年のシングル「Vision of Love」でスーパースターにしたモットーラだが、マライアいわく、コントロールしたがる彼の「指導」が彼女を精神的に痛めつけたという。マライアはニューヨーク州ベッドフォードにあるモットーラの豪邸を、皮肉をこめて「Sing Sing」と呼んでいるが、これはニューヨーク州にある有名な「Sing Sing刑務所」の名前になぞらえているだけではなく、彼女に求められていたことは歌うこと（Sing）だけだったからだ。

破局から8年。35歳になったマライアは、本当の自分になるためにそこまでの時間が必要だったと語った。それだけに、次のシングル「We Belong Together」のミュージック・ビデオでは、自身のウェディング・ドレスを着ることもわけなかった。このビデオは、エリック・ロバーツ扮するリッチな年上の男が彼女の動きに目を光らせている、現在オンエア中の「It's Like That」の続編。マライアいわく、3万ドルのウェディング・ドレスには、今となっては何の思い入れもないとのこと。

「20フィートの裾付きのヴェラ・ワン（のドレス）が倉庫で眠っているっていうのに、どうして（ビデオのために）ウェディング・ドレスなんて買うわけ?」とマライア。「使わない手はないでしょ。だってあのドレスは、あの結婚生活において最も汚くない部分だったんだもの。もしあの生活で毎日着ていたドレスだったら、ずっと昔に焼却炉行きだったでしょうね。でもあのドレスは一瞬しか着ていないの。そしてその瞬間は、不幸な経験ではなかったわ。問題は二人の関係の他の部分だったのよ」。

破局にも関わらず、マライアはモットーラのレーベルに2000年まで留まった。これについてはマライアも間違いだったと認めている。彼女はジェニファー・ロペスの「I'm Real」が映画「グリッター」のために用意された曲（「Loverboy」と「If We」）とひどく似ていたことについて、モットーラを責めるつもりはない。そして自身とJ. Loの関係については、「彼女のことはよく知らないの。1、2回挨拶したことがあるだけ」と述べた。

3月上旬にニューヨークのラジオ局で、DJのファンクマスター・フレックスから受けたインタビューの中で、マライアはJ. Loの元マネージャーだった自身のマネージャー、ベニー・メディーナが、再びJ. Loのマネージメントを引き受けるという噂について聞かれた。「今、彼女のチームにいるプロデューサー（モットーラまたはアーヴ・ゴッティ）が、あなたのレコーディング・セッションに入り浸っていたとか?」とフレックス。

「というよりも、私の人生に入り浸っていたという感じね」とマライア。

「1度は曲が盗まれたこともあったとか?」とフレックス。

「1度ですって?」と彼女は切り返した。

「あのレーベルを変える必要があったの」と彼女は今になって語る。「ソニーとの終わりなき戦いによって、私は感情的にも別の場所にいたわ。本当の自分と向き合うこととは逆に、常に自分を守ることを考えていた。誰かと死ぬまで戦うことはできるけど、世界を操ることはできないのよね」。

『MIMI』はマライアにとって、初めて言いたいことを言い、好きなように歌い、好きな衣装を着ることができる経験となる。2002年の『Charmbracelet』こそが、2001年の悲惨なアルバム／映画『グリッター』から彼女を救うはずだったのだが、当時の彼女は、世間やアドバイザーに求められている自分の姿を演じていた。

「みんなに『彼女はバラードを歌うべきだ』って言われていたの」とマライア。その通りにした彼女のアルバムは、全米で100万枚以上のセールスを記録。確かにすごい数字ではあるが、何度もマルチ・プラチナに輝いた過去の作品群とは非にならなかった。そして同作は、彼女の言うところの「想像上のノイローゼ」に対するマスコミの報道から、彼女を救うことが出来なかった。

その時点では、彼女いわく「本当に自分の裏をかき始めたわ。それから気付いたの。わかった、自分の本能でいかないといけないんだ、って。みんな意見はあるし、多くの人が私に対して抱いている意見は正反対だったりするから。『彼女のバラードは最高だ。バラードをやらせろ』って言ったかと思えば、『ヒップホップを聞きたいんだ』って言ったりする。『この格好は何だよ? もっと露出を押さえて』って言う人もいれば、『もっと肌を見せるべき』って言う人もいるしね。わかるかしら? それで私は『自分の車線から出てこないで。自分でどうにかするわ』って思ったわけ」。

ノイローゼが発覚してからも、似たような問題に直面した。「すべてのインタビューで、『傷つきやすくいて』って言われるのよ。私自身でいちゃだめ?って思っていたわ。だって正直言って、この“ノイローゼ”ってやつは、すごく誇張されていたから。だから話したくもなかったけど、それは不可能だったの」。

そして彼女は、世間や世間からの期待など気にしない、初期の彼女に戻った。『MIMI』については、「やりたかったアルバムができたと感じる」と語っている。スヌープ・ドッグやジャーメイン・デュプリ、トゥイスタ、ネリーなど、豪華アーティストとのコラボレーションも実現した。イノセントなラブ・ソングからスピリチュアルなバラードまで、多種多様だ。パーティー・ソングもあれば、恋愛の始まりを歌った曲、そして失恋についての歌まで揃っている。解放されるということは、好きな場所に行けるということを意味するのだ。

このアルバムは、マライアいわく「お涙ちょうだいもののバラードや、私の人生のドラマを描くことで、年老いたエグゼクティブを喜ばせるためのものではないの」とのこと。「私がやろうとしたことは、70年代のソウル・ミュージックのように各セッションをまばらにし、いじりすぎないこと。すべてのミュージシャンが一堂に会した時に、互いから得られるような…私が自分の方向性をヴォーカルで示して、ヴァイブスを与えることで音楽性を明らかにするの」。

「L.A.リード（Island/Def Jamレーベルのチーフ）は私がミミって呼ばれているのを聞いて、『このアルバムからはキミのスピリットが感じられるよ』って言ってくれたわ」と彼女は続けた。「『あの名前をタイトルにするべきだよ、それこそがみんなが知らないキミの楽しい一面なんだから――ディーヴァについてやノイローゼについて冗談にできて、何を言われようが笑い飛ばして、人生を楽しんでいるキミの一面だろう』ってね。だから今の私は、この瞬間を生きていて、楽しんでいるの。ハッピーな空間にいるのよ」。

「それに…」と彼女は加えた。「もしタイトルが『マライア・キャリーの解放』だったら、なんかやな感じでしょ」

これ先週USでも先に長いインタビュー映像がありましたが同じものです。JAPANの方がかなりカットされてますが（苦笑）インタビューの映像は短いですが、記事は結構たくさん掲載されてます。内容は今までのいろんなインタビューで話してたのが集まった感じですが、なかなか読み応えのある良いインタビューだと思います。

マライア・キャリーが、'94年の大ヒット・アルバム『メリー・クリスマス』の収録曲を基に、ブロードウェイ・ミュージカル用のストーリーを執筆していると公表しました。このミュージカルでは、同アルバムの収録曲以外にも新曲を2曲加えられる予定されるそうです。マライｱは「私、お祭り騒ぎが大好きで、クリスマスも大好きだわ。だから、こういったミュージカルを作ることができて本当に嬉しいし、私にとってぴったりの仕事なの。私にとってのクリスマス・ファンタジーを、ミュージカルを通じて、いろんな形で見せることができたらいいわね。家族で見ることのできる、楽しいものになるはずだわ」と語っています。

 It isn't a surprise when we tell you that Bruce Springsteen will be the new number 1 on this week's Billboard chart. His "Devils & Dust" sold 203,406 copies while Mariah's "The Emancipation Of Mimi" sold another 199,014 copies and can reach the one million mark next week.
At number 3 is Bobby Valentino's self-titled debut album with 183,062 copies sold and last week's number 1, Rob Thomas' "Something To Be", is at number 4 with 140,240 copies. Rounding up the top 5 is Amerie's "Touch" with 128,183 copies.

Coming up next, though, singer Mariah Carey on her music, her millions and the man she says tried to control her. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ZAHN: Is it true that you would head for a cheeseburger at McDonald's and you would be getting phone calls on your cell phone, where the heck are you going?

MARIAH CAREY, SINGER: Basically, yes.

ZAHN: How intimidating was that?

CAREY: It was -- it was stifling.

ZAHN: Mariah Carey speaks out on what led to her so-called meltdown and her comeback.

And then, a little bit later on, why seeing isn't necessarily believing. Check this photo out. You think it really happened that way, especially in the age of digital photographs?

ZAHN: All right, what we know now is that birds do it, and they aren't alone. Please stay tuned for some scientific research that shows just about every kind of animal cheats on their mate.

Four years ago, Mariah Carey endured a painful public meltdown that threatened her career, even her mental health. It came not long after she had ended a very troubled marriage. But she has fought her way back and this month released a comeback CD called "The Emancipation of Mimi." And it is a huge hit.

Tonight, with an exclusive interview, the spotlight is on Mariah Carey in "PEOPLE IN THE NEWS."

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ZAHN: The definition of emancipation is freeing someone from the control of another.

CAREY: It is one of the definitions. I actually list the definitions on the album packaging on the inside. So, it is funny that you should say that.

ZAHN: But the subtext of that, of course, takes you straight to Tommy Mottola.

CAREY: Right.

ZAHN: How trapped did you feel by that relationship?

CAREY: We don't have enough time in this interview.

ZAHN: I'll give you all the time you want, Mariah.

(LAUGHTER)

ZAHN (voice-over): On June 5, 1993, pop's most bankable superstar, Mariah Carey, married Sony Music president Tommy D. Mottola. She was 23. He was 45. It seemed like one sweet day.

CAREY: There were so many stars. I mean, I sat at a table with Barbra Streisand.

PETER CASTRO, "PEOPLE": The wedding itself was modeled after Charles and Diana. Mariah had this ridiculously over-the-top flowing wedding gown, that you could fit five of her into this thing.

CAREY: That day itself, that half-an-hour of wearing the dress was not bleak.

(LAUGHTER)

ZAHN (on camera): And things went downhill from there?

CAREY: Oh, well.

ZAHN: Oh, well.

(voice-over): To the public, Mariah Carey Mottola was living the fairy tale. But, to some, there was already speculation.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There was a perception of her, one she might take issue with. She was this little porcelain doll. She was Tommy's kept doll to be brought out, to stand there, to be the good girl, and to sing her ballads, to sing her heart out, and to wow us all, as she can, with her voice.

ZAHN: By the fall of 1993, it became apparent once upon a time was not heading toward happily ever after.

CASTRO: So, she moves into this big mansion and realizes that she's living now with this very controlling person. I mean, Tommy, she says, does not allow her to leave.

ZAHN: But is it true that you would head for a cheeseburger at McDonald's and you would be getting phone calls on your cell phone, where the heck are you going?

CAREY: Basically, yes.

ZAHN: How intimidating was that?

CAREY: It was -- it was stifling.

ZAHN: At one point, you and your friends refer to this Bedford mansion you lived in with Tommy Mottola as Sing Sing.

(LAUGHTER)

ZAHN: So, I'm supposed to believe that you were almost imprisoned there and you were expected to sing. CAREY: To sing and sing.

(LAUGHTER)

CAREY: I'm a jokester. So, of course, you know, Sing Sing, it was kind of warped. It was a choice I made. I can't blame him, because it was a relationship that I got into. Nobody held a gun to my head, I think.

(LAUGHTER)

ZAHN: Whatever the circumstances, Mottola's methods worked. On September 19, 1995, "Daydream," Mariah's sixth album in just five years, debuted at number one.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: "One Sweet Day" was this huge sort of pop anthem Boyz 2 Men and it was just a monster. She also released a song called "Fantasy." The original single version fun, up tempo but somewhat unremarkable song. Its remix, however...

That one remix was responsible for, I would argue, an entire wave of music that we have seen since. And that is the pop hip-hop collaboration. You can argue that that "Fantasy" remix was the single most important recording that she ever made.

ZAHN: That remix was also important personally, signaling the start of Mariah Carey's return to her roots.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She was part African-American and she loved hip-hop. But they would never allow her to do it because she was the ballad queen.

CAREY: It was very much about don't do this, don't say that, look like this, look like that. Don't sing this way, sing that way. And anything else you to is wrong.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They didn't want to tamper with the golden goose. If it wasn't broke, let's not fix it. And Mariah was all about taking chances and really diversifying.

ZAHN: And on a cold December day in 1996, 26-year-old Mariah Carey left her music mogul husband.

CAREY: Something inside me that has always been a fighter just said, you're going to lose who you are if you don't hit the dirt.

ZAHN: Returning to the studio, this time on her own, she emerged with the album "Butterfly."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She really was spreading her wings and flying, flying away from a man that admittedly helped her in a huge way career-wise. But you have to believe was holding her back in other respects.

ZAHN: Tommy Mottola declined CNN's request for an interview, but he did send us comment. Quote, "Over the course of my entire career, I've never commented on my personal life. But I would like to say that I continue to be Mariah's biggest fan. I've listened to the new CD, and I think it's her best work yet. I wish her continued success and much happiness. And I'm glad she got use out of the wedding dress."

(on camera): Now am I seeing things or are you wearing the same wedding gown you wore when you married Tommy Mottola.

CAREY: It is that Vera Wang gown.

ZAHN: So, how did it feel when you put it back on, Mariah?

CAREY: That moment of wearing the dress was a really nice moment. I can't say the same for the honeymoon.

ZAHN: Coming up, all that glitters is not gold -- the tabloids, the talk, the truth behind the meltdown.

CARSON DALY, MTV: Oh, my God. What are you doing?

ZAHN: So what went wrong in 2001 for you?

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

ZAHN: In the music world, Mariah Carey seemed to have the 1990s all to herself. A string of hit CDs that never seemed to end. Even a divorce from her music mogul husband didn't stop her.

But as we'll see, there was trouble coming down the road. Now more of our exclusive interview in tonight's "People in the News."

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ZAHN: In 1997, a Mariah Carey like we have never seen before emerged. Just minute from finalizing her divorce to Sony Music president Tommy Mottola, the ring was gone, the hair was down, the butterfly was taking flight.

CAREY: You know, I think it was a moment in time that people saw such a transition between the girl that was always really covered up to jumping in to a pool in the "Honey" video in my Gucci stilettos and ripping off the dress and being in the James Bond bikini which I loved and I lived for.

ZAHN: And with a new Mariah came a new reputation. On April 1998, she headlined VH1's "Divas Live."

Mariah Carey diva. Deserved? undeserved?

RANDY JACKSON, MUSIC PRODUCER: I'm not sure what diva is. Is it a negative thing? I don't know. She's far far, far, far from diva.

ZAHN: Why has she gotten tagged with that over the years?

JACKSON: Because she's so big, she's so successful. What else are they going to say? She's so big, she's so successful, I love you? ZAHN: Officially Mariah was now a diva in training. It was during this time buzz began to build about her short stop in spring training. His name, Derek Jeter.

But the connection didn't last long. Six months later, the romance turned to friendship which was hardly the case of Mariah, her ex-husband, and the label she called home.

CAREY: It was completely horrible to be there after the divorce. And it was a constant battle, a constant I've got survive. I've got get out of here. I've got to succeed on my own.

ZAHN: Album number nine arrived in November 1999. Two No. 1s and one world tour later, a blockbuster announcement, Virgin Records was offering five years, five albums $80 million.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It was astounding. It really was. Even given Mariah's status as the biggest selling female artist of the '90s, that kind of deal, you just do not see.

PETER CASTRO, PEOPLE MAGAZINE: That Virgin deal was huge. They felt that they had a money-making machine and then it all unraveled. It was a terrible, terrible sequence of events.

ZAHN: In the summer of 2001, Mariah Carey was everywhere. Her first album with Virgin was soon to be released. Her first motion picture was in the can. 2001, was supposed to be a glittering year.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think she was just pushing herself so, so hard that this single lover boy and then the soundtrack and then the movie all had to be right. And everyone points to that TRL appearance as the moment where it just seemed like she was on the verge of some sort of break down.

DALY: What are you doing? Mariah Carey is stripping on TRL right now.

ZAHN: And then on July 25, an outburst at her mother's home prompted a phone call to 911. And as the headlines blared, the superstar was hospitalized under psychiatric care.

(on camera): So, what went wrong in 2001 for you?

CAREY: I was working, working, working. I took it on my shoulders and said I'm going to work. I'm going to work every single minute of the day. I don't care, I'm going to make this happen. And then basically, I didn't sleep for like six days in a row. And I just collapsed. And it was a physical thing where nobody could have done that.

ZAHN: But as you were trying to regain your strength, you had to deal with the hysteria of this outside world trying to characterize what had happened to you, whatever way they wanted to. Was that hurtful to you?

CAREY: Yes. It was so astounding, you have no idea. They were making these headlines that were so over the top, it was like I was at my mother's house in my pajamas and somebody was literally in the bushes taking a picture. And, of course, you look ridiculous and crazy in your pajamas on the front page of a newspaper, like why is she in her pajamas?

ZAHN (voice-over): In the fall of 2001, both "Glitter" the film and album flopped. And as tabloids chronicled every move Mariah made, Virgin Records counted every penny they lost.

In April 2002, just one year after signing one of the biggest contracts in music history, Virgin paid Mariah $28 million and terminated their five-year deal.

CAREY: I think that it was a blessing, because I had to take a break. There had been no break since the demo tape. Since the beginning, there had been no break. And when I was in my married life, my breaks were worse than working. I liked working more than I liked being at home. So it was just like, OK, let me have a moment to just regain who I am.

ZAHN: And on April 12th, 2005, a 35-year-old diva walked through the door and re-entered the party.

Her latest is called "The Emancipation of Mimi." Its title honors her childhood nickname and alludes to newfound freedom.

RANDY JACKSON, FRIEND: She's now really in control of her own life and her own music, and guiding herself the right way.

ZAHN: From seven-octave highs to bittersweet lows, from beautiful ballads to restless R&B. The superstar of the '90s has returned.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Whatever the drama, whatever the diva image, deserved or not deserved, there is that voice. No one can take that away from her.

CAREY: Anytime in my childhood, anything negative I was going through, I would sing. Any difficult situation, I would write poetry. I would write lyrics, I would write songs. And that's what got me through a lot of those really difficult years.

Making music is the thing that keeps me going. It's the greatest gift that I've really ever gotten.
